The Problem Of Pain

C.S Lewis - Personal Name;

In The Problem of Pain, C.S. Lewis addresses one of the oldest and most challenging questions in Christian theology: If God is good and omnipotent, why does suffering exist? Lewis argues that pain is not evidence against God’s goodness, but rather a necessary part of a fallen world that can be used for moral growth and spiritual awakening. He examines the nature of God, the meaning of human free will, and the role of suffering in leading people to dependence on God. The book blends philosophical clarity with pastoral insight, offering readers both an intellectual and devotional approach to understanding pain in the light of Christian faith.

Specific Detail Info
The Problem of Pain by C.S. Lewis was first published in 1940 by Geoffrey Bles, running approximately 176 pages in most editions. Written in English, this early apologetic work seeks to reconcile the existence of a loving and all-powerful God with the reality of human and animal suffering. It was among Lewis’s first explicitly Christian books, written shortly after his conversion, and displays both his philosophical reasoning and accessible style. Modern editions are published by HarperOne and other presses, with ISBNs varying by format. The book’s concise chapters tackle divine omnipotence, human wickedness, the Fall of Man, Hell, Heaven, and animal pain.
